Don’t Hold Your Breath

There will be no public inquiry into Project Truth. There, I said it. It’s probably what most people around here have been thinking for a while, but I was still holding out hope – until now. The government has finally admitted it struck a secret deal with some local abuse victims but the fact they tried to keep it hushed should tell you something about how much the government wants the whole mess to be made public. Listening to local M-P-P Jim Brownell speak yesterday about it was depressing too. He does not sound like a man who has confidence his party will pursue an inquiry. Asked about his “gut-feeling” whether or not an investigation will take eventually place, all he could offer was “I have no idea”. For his part, Brownell has stuck to his guns and I imagine he was caught off guard when, months ago, the Attorney General’s office indicated it may have to “poll” people here to see if an inquiry is even wanted. The handwriting is on the wall and as Bob Dylan says “you don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.” C.S. Lewis called them “men without chests”, those who don’t have the guts to stand up for what is right. He could have been writing about our provincial government.
